Eagles claim RB Gordon on waivers
September 4, 2005
BRISTOL, Connecticut (Ticker) - The Philadelphia Eagles continued to maneuver their 53-man roster on Sunday, claiming running back Lamar Gordon off waivers from the Miami Dolphins.
The move comes a day after the defending NFC champions released veteran defensive end Hugh Douglas and fullback Jon Ritchie and signed wide receiver Darnerien McCants, who had been waived by the Washington Redskins.
The Eagles were looking for a backup running back to Brian Westbrook after losing Correll Buckhalter, who tore the patella tendon in his right knee during a practice on August 5.
Gordon, 25, has started 11 of 26 games in his three-year NFL career and rushed for 590 yards and two touchdowns on 171 carries and caught 51 passes for 411 yards and two scores.
"Lamar is a big back with good speed and quickness," Eagles coach Andy Reid said. "He also has the ability to catch the ball which will help him in this offense."
The 6-1, 223-pound Gordon spent his first two seasons with the St. Louis Rams before being traded to the Miami Dolphins two days before the start of the 2004 season. He played in just three games for Miami before being sidelined for the remainder of the season with a dislocated shoulder.
The return of Ricky Williams to Miami after a one-year retirement along with the selection of Ronnie Brown with the second overall pick in the 2005 draft made Gordon expendable.
"I am very excited to be joining the Eagles," Gordon said. "I have heard many great things about the organization and they have one of the best teams in the league. I am looking to contribute in any way I can to help keep that thing going forward."
The Eagles released running back Bruce Perry to make room on the roster for Gordon.
