Eagles sign TE Chad Lewis to active roster
November 9, 2005
PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) - Three-time Pro Bowl tight end Chad Lewis will be among those competing for balls in the absence of star wide receiver Terrell Owens.
On Wednesday, the Philadelphia Eagles signed Lewis and center-guard Jamaal Jackson from their practice squad and linebacker Dedrick Roper from the Pittsburgh Steelers' practice squad.
Lewis, 34, has caught 223 passes for 2,285 yards and 23 touchdowns in 101 regular-season games as a member of the Eagles. In 11 postseason games, he holds the club record for receptions (38), including two that went for scores in last season's NFC title game against Atlanta.
However, Lewis suffered a sprained foot that kept him out of the ensuing Super Bowl matchup against the New England Patriots and has not played in the NFL since.
"I worked really hard to get back here," Lewis said. "It's been 9 1/2 months and I have worked every day. It's been a big mountain to climb, it's been a big challenge and I have embraced the challenge and I am honored to be here. I know what a gift it is to be on this team and I am ready to give everything I have to help this team win."
Lewis will play a role in an Eagles offense playing without Owens, who was suspended four games for conduct detrimental to the team after he took another verbal jab at quarterback Donovan McNabb and criticized the organization.
The Eagles on Wednesday officially placed Owens, who last season set a franchise-record with 14 receiving touchdowns, on the reserve-suspended list. This season, Owens had 47 catches for 763 yards and six touchdowns.
