What do the names mean? Now, they mean playing time and pecking order and who starts and who is a reserve.
The Eagles updated their official depth chart on Monday morning. Here are some notables about it:
Derrick Burgess is the starter at right defensive end, ahead of Hugh Douglas and Jamaal Green. Burgess has enjoyed a strong summer after missing all of the 2003 season and all but one game of the 2002 campaign. Douglas, signed after Jacksonville released him last week, is No.2 on the depth chart.
Reno Mahe is going to be a busy player. He's listed as the second running back behind Brian Westbrook, is listed as the No. 1 punt return man and is slated to be teamed with J.R. Reed on kickoff returns.
Thomas Tapeh is listed as a fullback only, backing up Jon Ritchie. Tapeh is expected, though, to get some work at running back in preparation for Sunday's game against the Giants.
The reserve situation along the offensive line is interesting. Artis Hicks is the backup at left tackle and left guard, Alonzo Ephraim is the backup at center and Trey Darilek is the second-strong player at both right guard and right tackle.
Chad Lewis is the starting tight end, with L.J. Smith listed as No. 2.
Paul Grasmanis is ahead of Sam Rayburn on the depth chart at left defensive tackle, behind starter Corey Simon.
Quintin Mikell is the No. 2 strong safety and Clinton Hart is No. 2 at free safety. Reed is the No. 3 free safety.
