Mike McMahon struggled throwing 2 INTs that were returned for TDs. His replacement, Koy Detmer, did not fare much better. The D played poorly (albeit playing most of the game with their backs to the wall).
Analysis:
How in the world did last year's NFC champs get so bad so fast? In my opinion, D-Mac and TO were 2 star players keeping a bad team competitive. The Eagles defense is but a shell of what it used to be. No longer do the Eagles dictate to other teams how the game will be played. Instead, we get our tails handed to us week after week.
The culminating result of what we saw on the field last night (which was a total disgrace to the family and former teammates of Reggie White, btw) is a combination of front office arrogance, an inability to handle personnel issues without them becoming national media events, an obviously-skewed player position value rating system by the coaching staff, poor game-time coaching, and 0 prime time players who understand what it takes to step up and perform in big-time games.
Unfortunately, the Eagles may have just drifted into becoming one of the worst 5 teams in the entire league. Shocking, but there aren't too many teams that I confidently feel we could beat right now.
I say all that to say this. I don't believe that a 'strong' free agency and draft is what will fix this problem. If we drill down to the root causes, it is easy to identify certain problems that AR seems unwilling to acknowledge:
1) The Eagles need WRs who are going to fight for the football (Todd Pinkston is tougher than anything we have on the field right now)
2) Brian Westbrook needs a big, quality back to complement him (STOP COUNTING ON CORRELL BUCKHALTER!)
3) OLB is becoming one of the most important defensive positions in the game (better get some guys who can cover, blitz, sack, and tackle)
4) Teams that run the ball well have a quality FB (when was the last time the Eagles had a quality FB? - Kevin Turner maybe)
5) Having great safeties means absolutely nothing if you can't get any pressure on the QB
6) Could we get the head coach to show any kind of emotion whatsoever on the side line?!?
7) Why does it seem like we've been running the same schemes for the last 5-7 years while other teams have been adapting theirs to the ever-changing NFL?
END OF RANT
