PERRY RECEIVES HOLIDAY GIFT
December 20, 2005
By CHRIS McPHERSON
Running back Bruce Perry walked to head coach Andy Reid's office Tuesday morning and received a simple message.
"Merry Christmas."
Perry received the news that he was going to be promoted from the practice squad to the 53-man active roster to take the place of rookie Todd Herremans, who became the 13th player to hit the Injured Reserve list courtesy of a fractured ankle.
"It's a blessing," said Perry. "It'll be a much better feeling when we get to Arizona and hit the grass out there. I'm happy to have the opportunity once again."
The former George Washington High School star, whose family still resides in the East Oak Lane section of Philadelphia, was on the active roster for one day. That was when the final cuts were made at the end of training camp and Perry was a member of the active roster. But when the Dolphins released Lamar Gordon, the Eagles took the chance on Gordon and let Perry go. Perry wasn't claimed by another team, so the Eagles signed him to the practice squad.
Perry was the Eagles' seventh-round draft pick in 2004. At Maryland, Perry finished fourth on the all-time record list with 2,424 rushing yards. In 2001, Perry was a finalist for the Doak Walker Award, which is given to the best running back in the nation.
Perry's rookie season never got started after he suffered a shoulder injury during the preseason against New England and was placed on Injured Reserve. Perry fought back and had a solid preseason, running for 142 yards on 30 carries - a 4.7 average - and a pair of touchdowns.
Perry didn't even think that he would be promoted to the active roster. In fact, he didn't learn of Herremans' injury until Monday. Now, he has to pack his bags for this weekend's trip to Arizona.
"You have to make the most out of your opportunities and that's what I try to pride myself on," said Perry. "The weight's never lifted. It's a week-to-week thing. You have to be able to perform. I'm looking forward to it."
But first, Perry has to share the news with his fiancée, Latasha Ford, who has been one of Perry's biggest supporters all season.
"She's always been the No. 1 person in my corner," said Perry. "She kept telling me the good times were going to come. It's a blessing for the both of us."
It's the perfect surprise for the holidays.
