News And Notes: Making Changes
July 21, 2006
By ZACH BERMAN
The Eagles made a minor roster move on Friday when they claimed guard Jeff Roehl off waivers and released offensive lineman Dejuan Skinner.
Roehl was a rookie free agent with the New York Giants in 2003 when he played 12 games, starting two of them. He was released by the Giants before the 2004 season and had brief stints with the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots.
He played in NFL Europe during the spring, earning All-NFLEL honors before the Patriots waived the Northwestern product.
Roehl enters a crowded mix of young offensive linemen, although his NFL experience certainly is an advantage as training camp accelerates.
Number Change
Receiver Hank Baskett looked unfamiliar at first to media members expecting to see Baskett wearing No. 80, like he did in the spring. Instead, the rookie free agent acquired for former third-round pick Billy McMullen was wearing No. 84.
It turns out free-agent signee Jabar Gaffney preferred No. 80 to No. 84. He switched, and thus Baskett's uniform changed.
A Good Sign
Quarterback Jeff Garcia endeared himself to Eagles fans after Friday morning's practice by staying at the field more than 40 minutes to sign autographs.
The off-season free agent addition who earned three Pro Bowl appearances while starting for the San Francisco 49ers was in his first training camp practice with the Eagles and wanted to honor the fans who attended despite the heat and limited numbers in attendance.
"It's important to recognize and appreciate fans that come here to support us," Garcia said. "Signing autographs is just a way of saying thank you to them for being fans."
