Gaffney Situation Pending
July 28, 2006 By ZACH BERMAN
Internet reports that surfaced early Friday morning alleging Eagles first-round pick Brodrick Bunkley was arrested for possession of a loaded gun are "false," head coach Andy Reid said. Gaffney was pulled over last month while moving from Houston However, when asked by a reporter if receiver Jabar Gaffney was arrested last month, Reid stated that Gaffney was pulled over and explained that the gun was registered in Texas, where Gaffney previously played with the Houston Texans for the past four seasons.
Gaffney "thought that was fine," Reid said.
According to the Camden County Prosecutor's office, Gaffney was charged with Unlawful Possession of a Weapon. It is a third-degree offense, which "carries a maximum five-year prison term, but a presumption of non-incarceration for a first offense."
The prosecutor's office revealed that Gaffney's lawyer said Gaffney intends to enroll in Pre-Trial Intervention (PTI) program, which is a diversionary program for people with clean records who commit third and fourth-degree charges for non-violent offenses. Upon successful completion of the program, the charges are dropped.
Reid said the situation is still pending. He wouldn't go into specifics about any disciplinary action from the team.
"It was a legal situation as far as he knew," Reid said. "He did have the gun registered, it was in a different state and he was in the process of moving. I got to see what goes on, but Jabar's not the guy who I'm too worried about."
