Owens gets a new agent
By Don Steinberg, Inquirer Staff Writer
Terrell Owens has switched agents, according to a report yesterday in Sports Business Daily.
The Eagles wide receiver, who provided a much-needed jolt to the team's passing game, has left David Joseph and joined about 90 NFL players managed by Drew Rosenhaus.
Owens caught 77 passes for 1,200 yards (15.6 yards per catch) last season for the NFC champions.
He signed a seven-year contract with the Eagles worth between $46 and $48 million last March. The deal included a $10 million signing bonus. The first year of that contract is complete.
ESPN.com, citing sources, reported last night that Rosenhaus was planning to meet with the Eagles, maybe even as early as today, to discuss that contract.
Joseph and Rosenhaus did not immediately return phone calls late yesterday. But Rosenhaus was quoted in Sports Business Daily as saying: "We are Terrell Owens' new agent."
Owens had been Joseph's only major NFL client. It was Joseph who guided Owens through the receiver's rough passage from the 49ers to the Eagles in March 2004.
Rosenhaus has been on a tear lately, signing Edgerrin James (Indianapolis Colts), Chad Johnson (Cincinnati Bengals), Javon Walker (Green Bay Packers) and Plaxico Burress away from other agents in recent weeks.
In Burress' case, he quickly got a deal done to land the former Pittsburgh Steelers receiver with the New York Giants.
Rosenhaus negotiated Jevon Kearse's contract with the Eagles in March 2004, shortly before the controversy in which Joseph was said to have filed paperwork too late to make Owens, then a 49er, a free agent.
The 49ers traded Owens to the Baltimore Ravens. While an arbitrator sorted out the situation, the Eagles worked out a three-way trade and signed Owens.
Owens, who suffered a severe ankle injury that required surgery in December, returned to the lineup for the Eagles' Super Bowl loss to New England. He caught nine passes for 122 yards against the Patriots.
