According to a report in the Kansas City Star on Tuesday, Simpson, a senior safety who was the team's second-leading tackler, was arrested for possession of marijuana and has been suspended.
The newspaper said Simpson had been arrested for possession of less than 35 grams of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia and will miss the team's December 30 Independence Bowl matchup with Spurrier's South Carolina squad in Shreveport, Louisiana.
A native of The Woodlands, Texas, Simpson made 88 tackles and tied for the team lead with 12 pass breakups for the 6-5 Tigers.
