Eagles 53-man roster prediction update after the first preseason game
Source: BleedingGreenNation
Now that we’ve seen 10 Philadelphia Eagles training camp practices and one preseason game, it’s time for an updated 53-man roster prediction. Our last version was published five days into camp. We’ll do another projection after the upcoming span that includes two practices (one joint training camp practice) and a preseason game against the New England Patriots.
Here we go.
OFFENSE
QB: Jalen Hurts, Kenny Pickett, Tanner McKee (3) [3]
Hurts is having a great training camp. His backups are not inspiring much confidence, though. Pickett’s still ahead of McKee ... for now. I wonder if Will Grier transitions to coaching.
RB: Saquon Barkley, Kenny Gainwell, Will Shipley (3) [6]
Can’t say Barkley has done a whole lot of noteworthy stuff in camp. Gainwell will be RB2 but Shipley is pushing for a role by showing he can run, catch the ball, pass protect, and contribute on special teams. There are multiple backs competing for the RB4 spot but the Eagles can probably keep that guy (or two) on the practice squad.
WR: A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith, Johnny Wilson, Britain Covey, Parris Campbell (5) [11]
Brown and Smith look awesome. Maybe even better than ever? The depth behind them ... less so. Wilson has been getting run with the first-team offense; he can certainly be useful in certain situations but it’s bit much to count on him as a full-time player from the jump. Covey looks like he could be an adequate possession receiver in addition to being a very good punt returner. Campbell’s stock has gone down while missing time due to injury and he very well might not make the club if he’s going to continue to be in the tub. John Ross has been fine but hardly a must-keep. The Eagles will probably try to add to this position via trade before the season begins. For now, I’m keeping Campbell as a placeholder.
TE: Dallas Goedert, Grant Calcaterra, Jack Stoll (3) [14]
Goedert is the top guy and Calcaterra has stepped up to earn the No. 2 job behind him. When it comes to TE3, none of the Eagles’ current options have looked great. Perhaps new acquisition Armani Rogers will pop here. If no one seizes the opportunity, the Eagles could look to reunite with old friend Jack Stoll. Based on what I’ve read from Big Blue View, it looks like Stoll could be on the outs. And we know the Eagles trust him to block and play special teams.
OL: Jordan Mailata, Landon thingyerson, Cam Jurgens, Mekhi Becton, Lane Johnson, Tyler Steen, Brett Toth, Fred Johnson, Trevor Keegan, Dylan McMahon (10) [24]
Becton has overtaken Steen at right guard — for the time being, at least. It previously seemed like Toth was on the outside looking in but the Eagles have utilized him with the first-team at both center and guard in injury replacement scenarios. Johnson has had a decent camp as a swing tackle option. Keegan has only played at left guard but he’s looked solid. McMahon is going to make the team. The Eagles don’t seem to absolutely love Matt Hennessy based on his lack of first-team reps (when there have been ample opportunities for him to fill in) and how he played late into the first preseason game with the likes of Max Scharping and Nick Gates, who aren’t included on the roster in this projection.
DEFENSE
EDGE: Bryce Huff, Josh Sweat, Brandon Graham, Nolan Smith, Jalyx Hunt, Patrick Johnson (6) [30]
Huff’s had a pretty quiet summer. Then again, he’s going against Lane Johnson and it’s not like Haason Redthingy always lit it up in practice. Sweat is doomed for a bad year after choosing to wear No. 19. Entering Year 15, Graham still looks like he can play. Still don’t fully know what to make of Smith yet. Hunt looks more advanced than expected; he’s been pretty intriguing. Johnson has some pass rush juice (as evidenced by his clutch strip-sack to help the Eagles win their first preseason game) and he reps with first-team special teams units.
DT: Jalen Carter, Jordan Davis, Milton Williams, Marlon Tuipulotu, Moro Ojomo (5) [35]
Carter could realistically be an All-Pro in Year 2. Davis needs to prove he can hold up over the course of the season. Williams has had a good camp. Tuipulotu looks like a solid DT4 or DT5. Ojomo’s flashed in practice. With the Eagles often using five-man fronts with three DTs, they might want to keep six here. Thomas Booker IV and P.J. Mustipher could be in contention. UDFA defensive lineman Gabe Hall hasn’t really done much.
LB: Devin White, Zack Baun, Nakobe Dean, Jeremiah Trotter Jr., Ben VanSumeren (5) [40]
White and Baun seem to be the starters. They’ve taken the first 11-on-11 first-team defense reps in 10 out of 10 practices and they were first up again in the first preseason game (this sentence has four uses of “first” ... or now five). Dean looks good when he’s operating downhill and he does not look good moving out in space. Trotter Jr. looks like he belongs; it wouldn’t be shocking if he eventually plays his way into a starting job at this rate. BVS seems solid on defense and helpful on special teams. Oren Burks hasn’t practiced since the first day of camp. Brandon Smith has been missing time due to a concussion.
CB: Darius Slay, Isaiah Rodgers, Quinyon Mitchell, Kelee Ringo, Cooper DeJean, Josh Jobe (6) [46]
Rodgers is currently the favorite for CB2 but Ringo seemed to close the gap with a good first preseason game. Mitchell could also contend for the outside starting job but it seems like the coaches are having him focus on being the nickel corner. If the original reporting on DeJean’s recovery holds true, the rookie should be back within a week ... but he’s missed valuable time. Jobe played more special teams snaps than Eli Ricks did in the first preseason game, which could speak to how the coaches trust him to help out more in that regard. Maybe the Eagles trade Ricks for more depth at another position? Tyler Hall struggled on Friday night and could end up on the practice squad.
S: Reed Blankenship, C.J. Gardner-Johnson, Avonte Maddox, Tristin McCollum (4) [50]
CJGJ is dealing with a shoulder injury that isn’t believed to be overly serious. Maddox gives the Eagles depth at both safety and nickel corner. McCollum gets first-team special team reps and he’s been an active defender. I struggle with the idea of keeping James Bradberry here. Is he definitely a worthwhile depth option at this position? And is he going to be a backup who doesn’t help out on special teams (one ST snap played against the Ravens)? I’m still guessing Howie Roseman finds a way to trade him.
SPECIAL TEAMS
K: Jake Elliott (1) [51]
Elliott is the Eagles’ kicker. (No more misses, Jake!)
P: Braden Mann (1) [52]
Mann is the Eagles’ punter.
LS: Rick Lovato (1) [53]
Lovato is the Eagles’ long snapper.
INJURY DESIGNATION
RESERVE/PUP - PHYSICALLY UNABLE TO PERFORM: Sydney Brown
It’s possible that Brown will be able to avoid going on reserve/PUP, where he’d automatically have to miss at least the first four games of the season. But we’ve heard no updates on his progress and it might just be best to play it safe with his recovery. With the Eagles having an early Week 5 bye, that’d give Brown even more time to get back to 100%. And, for the sake of this weekly exercise, I figured we’d run at least one scenario where Brown does begin the season on the PUP list.
PRACTICE SQUAD
RB Kendall Milton, RB Tyrion Davis-Price, WR John Ross, WR Ainias Smith, TE E.J. Jenkins, OT Anim Dankwah, OL Darian Kinnard, OG Matt Hennessy, EDGE Julian Okwara, DT Thomas Booker IV, DT P.J. Mustipher, LB Oren Burks, LB Brandon Smith, CB Tyler Hall, DB Mekhi Garner, S Andre’ Sam
International exemption: OT Laekin Vakalahi
